On this day in 1994, Eastern Championship Wrestling hosted a tournament to crown a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion.
What was supposed to be the dawning of a new era for the wrasslin’ empire became the final nail in its coffin.
2 Cold Scorpio battled Shane Douglas in the tournament final, which Douglas won after hitting his signature belly-to-belly suplex. The Franchise’s victory speech then changed the wrestling landscape forever.
The Philly wrestling scene, especially we here at Wrestledelphia, would not exist without Douglas’ tirade against the establishment and subsequent launch of Extreme Championship Wrestling.
