Levin: The Kevin Owens Show Needs A Better Time Slot

The former WWE Intercontinental Champion's potential isn't being realized, writes David Levin.

The biggest loser in the recent news of Roman Reigns’ suspension for violating WWE’s Talent Wellness policy might have been Kevin Owens. With all the rumors circulating weeks before Money in the Bank about this being Owens’ night and the big push that awaited him as the company’s top heel, you have to wonder what was going through his mind as it was determined that Dean Ambrose would grab the briefcase and cash it in on the same night.

Another top wrestler gets the screwed on an evening that should have been his to celebrate.

There is no easy way around this one. The elephant is too big. Owens has been cast as the lead villain in this soap opera for some time now. Regardless of the company’s push to make AJ Styles and The Club the lead heel faction, Owens has been the guy who has come from NXT and proved he could work with the best in the business and has earned the right to run toward glory.

It looks like those plans are now on hold. For now, Owens is trapped in an elevator somewhere between the penthouse and the outhouse—which floor he lands on has a lot to do with how the Reigns’ situation is handled as Battleground looms. To further complicate things, the return of Seth Rollins knocks the former WWE Intercontinental Champion down another rung on the company ladder.

The events of the past couple weeks and rumors of the company knowing about Reigns’ failure before the Money in the Bank pay-per-view has caused a bit of a firestorm, but it should not consume everything that is good right now. Owens was part of that success. He still should be. We don’t need to see the Canadian locked in a forever-type feud with Sami Zayn and we certainly don’t want to see him fall further down the mid card. If there is a no man’s land, this is the prime example of it.

Owens’ place in WWE is solid, but he must be booked better in an effort to maximize just how great he is. The Money in the Bank Ladder match was solid, but the buildup was even better. Is there a feud with Alberto Del Rio that continues from the event? Does Chris Jericho play into this scenario? Could he challenge someone like Bray Wyatt (yes, please) or do the McMahons have a seat reserved for him at the dinner table opposite Brock Lesnar?

For the time being, it looks like the Owens-Zayn saga continues.

There is a lot of potential with Owens, but results are what matter. WWE can ill afford him to fall into the same category as Rusev, the powerhouse who came in like a lion, cried like a kitten, and then has to build his profile once more. There is too much talent to waste.

After SummerSlam, which is closing in on all of us quickly, I would hope Owens gets his shot. Rollins should be the company champion and should have already become a babyface. The need for Reigns to turn to the dark side will have already happened and fans will enjoy the imminent run Owens deserves. The events of others have affected his upward mobility. It should not end it or put it on temporary hold.
