WWE Battleground
After the pay-per-view blitz a few months ago, going five weeks before writing another one of these feels like coming home for Christmas. Luckily there were plenty of UFC events to keep my jellybean supply well-stocked.

This is a weird event – there aren’t any locks, in my opinion. None of the matches have big differences in odds, either, so there isn’t really an opportunity for big wins. That’s bad for betting, but good for the viewer.

The rules: I am betting imaginary jellybeans for each match (based on Paddy Power’s odds) and keeping track of my “winnings.” I’m dividing my picks into three categories: 🔒 Locks™, Solid Picks and Stay Aways. I will bet 10 jellybeans on the 🔒 Locks™, five on the Solid Picks, and none on the Stay Aways.

Here are my Battleground picks. Remember that I’m not necessarily picking the winner, but the one that I feel is the best bet.

🔒 Locks

None

Solid Picks

Tag Team Match For The WWE Tag Team Championship

Prime Time Players (c): 4/7 (-175)

The New Day: 5/4 (+125)

Pick: The New Day

I’m not too happy about this pick, since I’ve really enjoyed Titus O’Neil’s mic work recently, but I just don’t see PTP carrying the tag titles into the second-biggest show of the year. For some reason, they’ve spent quite a bit of time beating up on The Ascension on Superstars and Main Event, and haven’t gotten much time on Raw. That’s not their fault, but I think creative would rather have a hot heel tag team hold the belts for the SummerSlam buildup.

Singles Match

Roman Reigns: 4/6 (-150)

Bray Wyatt: 11/10 (+110)

Pick: Roman Reigns

This match will probably end in a screwy manner. If possible, I’d bet on a disqualification. Alas, I cannot, so I’m taking the safe bet in Roman Reigns. Bray Wyatt could use a win, but I have a hard time believing that Reigns will take a loss here, unless maybe it’s an extremely dirty loss. Reigns winning in some manner is the safe bet, though.

Singles Match For The United States Championship

Kevin Owens: 4/7 (-175)

John Cena: 5/4 (+125)

Pick: Kevin Owens

Another match that might end dirty. Over the past ten years, John Cena has lost cleanly ten times. He’s never lost clean more than once to the same guy in that time span. I think Kevin Owens will make history… at SummerSlam. I see Owens stealing the belt here in a heel fashion, much like Rusev in the first matchup with Cena at Fast Lane. From there, the feud will wrap up at SummerSlam, where Owens retains the belt – perhaps in a triple threat with Cesaro – in a clean manner over Cena. The Cena-Owens feud has been excellent, and I hope it doesn’t end here.

Singles Match For The WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Brock Lesnar: 8/11 (-138)

Seth Rollins: 1/1 (+100)

Pick: Brock Lesnar

When in doubt, bet on the Beast. There’s only one thing that’s sure about this match: Brock Lesnar will not lose cleanly. I’ve already predicted a screwy finish for two matches so far, and there’s no way the three biggest matches on a card all end without a decisive finish. Kane and J&J are out of commission. While I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rollins somehow take this match, Lesnar winning makes the most sense.

Stay Aways

Singles Match

King Barrett: 4/9 (-225)

R-Truth: 13/8 (+163)

Pick: King Barrett

R-Truth won the last preshow matchup. I can’t imagine King Barrett losing another one. But it’s the preshow, so who the hell knows. Let’s move on.

Singles Match

Sheamus: 4/6 (-150)

Randy Orton: 11/10 (+110)

Pick: Sheamus

I honestly don’t know what to do with this match. On one hand, Sheamus is Mr. Money in the Bank, and Randy Orton is Mr. No One Cares if He Loses As Long As He RKOs People. You’d think Sheamus is a lock. But WWE has been notoriously bad at building up the briefcase holders, since they can just cash in at any time and be a main eventer. That works with someone like Dolph Ziggler, who is over no matter what. That won’t work with Sheamus. The smart thing is to have the Celtic Warrior win, but I’m hesitant, so don’t bet on it.

Overall record to date: 19-16-2

Jellybeans won to date: 30.11 on a 14-12-2 record

Biggest win: 45 jellybeans (Ryback def. Sheamus, Mark Henry, King Barrett, Dolph Ziggler & R-Truth at Elimination Chamber 2015)
