What does Philadelphia have to do to get Wrestlemania again?
It has been announced that Wrestlemania 34 will take place in New Orleans, a city that held Wrestlemania no less than five years ago. It’s not fair to the other cities dying for the event to return or to make a first time visit there.
Philadelphia is the heart and soul of hardcore wrestling. It was the home of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) for almost a decade. The city’s rich wrestling history dates back to the Spectrum with names like Graham, Backlund, Sammartino and Hogan all having big marquee matches there. The one and only time that WrestleMania was held in Philly was back in 1999 when The Rock defended his WWE Championship against Stone Cold Steve Austin inside a jam-packed First Union Center.
Philadelphia has all the tools to host Wrestlemania again. Lincoln Financial Field could easily hold the major event with over 60,000 screaming fans in attendance. The Wells Fargo Center, formerly First Union, could host Raw, NXT: Takeover, or the Hall of Fame, or even some combination of the three. The Pennsylvania Convention Center is an ideal place for Axxess with its multiple rooms that can hold large amounts of gatherings at the same time. If the weather is nice, Citizens Bank Park has a lot of space for either Takeover or Raw depending on how big the WWE would want to make that weekend. Hell, it’s Wrestlemania: go big or go home.
Cities like Los Angeles and Atlanta have better chances of getting Wrestlemania before Philadelphia due to new stadiums being built. We all know Vince loves being the first major event in a new stadium. Therefore, a return to Philadelphia may not happen for several more years to come, but a return is definitely needed.
