Villanova never had a prayer…
AND we’re down to the semifinals of Wrestledelphia’s hardly-participated bracket to crown the greatest wrasslin’ promo of all time.
In what I consider the upset of the tournament, Cane Dewey lost to Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels’ “Old Yeller” promo the RAW before WrestleMania 24. Even though I voted for “Old Yeller” because it’s my favorite promo, I didn’t expect such a classic monologue, perhaps Mick Foley’s best, to not make the finals.
In another upset, Ultimate Warrior’s self-eulogy defeated Ric Flair’s epic “With a Tear in my Eye” victory promo following Royal Rumble 1992. Possibly a pattern with Warrior and Old Yeller as wrestling fans tend to enjoy sad finales for their childhood heroes.
And then the biggest matchup in the tournament–Austin 3:16 vs. Punk’s Pipebomb–ended as I envision the dream match between the two rebels would, with the Texas Rattlesnake kick, WHAM, stunnering Punk for the win.
So now it’s Austin vs. Warrior and Flair/Michaels vs. Paul Heyman.
