The most badass beer since Steveweiser tapped in Philadelphia on Cinco de Mayo as Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Broken Skull IPA arrived in the City of Brotherly Love for the Craft Brewers Conference.
Dozens of thirsty wrasslin’ fans packed into the upstairs of Tattooed Mom, a punk rock-style bar on South Street reminiscent of the last scene in Vinyl’s first season. Representatives from the California-based El Segundo Brewing Company were on hand, giving out Broken Skull t-shirts, stickers and other promotional products.
Broken Skull IPA debuted in November of 2015 and hasn’t been available to Pennsylvania for unknown shipping reasons. When I tried sending it to Dallas for WrestleMania 32, the combined costs of the shipping and actual purchase (two bottled beers and a pint glass) totaled almost $50. So I was anxious to pay $6 for a cold glass of the 6.7% India Pale Ale brewed with Cascade, Citra and Chinook hops.
I recruited two of my non-beer drinking (but WrestleMania-attending) friends to taste the Texas Rattlesnake’s delicious venom. Here’s what they thought:
“First beer I’ve actually been able to finish in months,” said diehard Ryback fan Rob Zielinski, popping his IPA cherry.
“As a person who isn’t a big fan of beer, especially IPAs, it was good,” said high school lacrosse coach Mr. Chu. “It had a hint of fruit, which I can still not figure out, which gave it a different taste.”
They weren’t the only fans. Here’s what Twitter had to say:
