A lackluster Survivor Series foreshadowed a week full of bad in the WWE. However, Survivor Series is now in the rearview mirror, and with five hours of televised content per week, the road to TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs has been paved.
The Good
Restoring Superstar And Title Relevancy
The one thing I did not like about Survivor Series prior to watching, which I stated in last week’s review, was that the WWE United States and WWE Intercontinental Championships were not going to be defended. Since beating John Cena for the U.S. Title, Alberto Del Rio has yet to defend his strap. But since returning to WWE, many have predicted a rivalry with Jack Swagger as a result of Del Rio’s alliance with Swagger’s former manager, Zeb Colter.
Shades of WrestleMania 29 are on the horizon for TLC, as another great match is expected between these the pair.
The Show Meets The Asylum
Dean Ambrose further rose to stardom as he made the finals in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament, succeeding against Kevin Owens just over an hour following a semifinal matchup. With World Title hopes for Ambrose past him as the WWE pushes the Roman Reigns-Sheamus rivalry, WWE is making a big push to give the fans what they want: gold around Ambrose’s waist.
Ambrose has been the fan favorite of the three Shield members since the trio’s split a year and a half ago. Ambrose has been in a title picture in several stints, including multiple appearances in Cena’s United States Championship open challenge.
Owens, the current holder of the Intercontinental Title, has had a phenomenal run as IC Champion and is an expected contender for the World Heavyweight Championship in the future. The pairing of the two will be just as good, if not better than their Survivor Series matchup.
The Bad
Dudley Who?
In a perfect world, the Dudley Boys would become ten-time WWE Tag Team Champions at TLC—a pay-per-view that they are partially responsible for inspiring as per their innovation during the Attitude Era along with tag teams such as the Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian.
In recent weeks, Bubba Ray and D-Von (dare I type Devon) have been transitioning from contenders to jobbers, pushing the young guns of the Tag Team division. This week, they were fed to the Wyatt Family—a group that’s done a fair share of jobbing themselves.
Ratings 2:16 Says I Just Whooped Your @$$
Fans were hoping for either a Reigns or Ambrose heel-turn in the main event at Survivor Series that would lead to either of them leaving with the World Heavyweight Championship. Both Superstars could have made great heel champions. What happened instead?
In a kayfabe viewpoint, no one wants to get screwed over after going through four competitors to grab the title. In a fan viewpoint, just look at the ratings for Raw: 2.16.
For anyone who looks into ratings, the usual number for Raw is at least 3. As the longest-running episodic television show, those ratings put the WWE in danger.
